Founded by Grant Alabaster, mastic asphalt has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. Some of his earliest childhood memories are of his dad coming home from work smelling of asphalt — a scent that meant pride, hard work, and craftsmanship. Even as a schoolboy he would join him on jobs, learning the ropes from the ground up.
Although Alabaster Mastic Asphalt is a new chapter, the journey in asphalting began back in 1982, with Grant an apprentice at Asphaltic. Lucky to learn from some of the best in the trade, trusted with large jobs and leading a gang before finishing his apprenticeship. Later moving on to Coverite Asphalt, where he continued to take on major projects, though always happy working as a spreader in another gang — never been afraid to get stuck in and let the work speak for itself.
In the 1990s, when work slowed, he went to work alongside his father at GA Roofing (Gerry Alabaster). He was a good spreader himself, but by then Grant was leading the laying, and Gerry was happy to be potman. Working side by side for over 30 years — a partnership treasured. Sadly, Gerry passed in January 2025. While many expected Grant to take over the family business, circumstances meant the equipment went elsewhere. But that only made Grant and his family more determined to carry on a generational tradition.
That’s why Alabaster Mastic Asphalt started — to continue the family name and the legacy of quality and traditional asphalt work. Believing mastic asphalt is the best waterproofing system out there, taking pride in producing work that’s built to last.
